Saipul Jamil Can Appear on Television, KPI Asked Not to Confuse
The public is disappointed that the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) has allowed the sexual offender Saipul Jamil, who has been released from prison, to appear on television for educational purposes.
Responding to this, member of the House of Representatives Commission I Bobby Adhityo Rizaldi said that there was no prohibition against Saipul Jamil from appearing on television. However, television station owners must look at the norms of propriety. This is because the public has petitioned to boycott Saipul Jamil.
“I think what KPI is asking for, it seems impossible for TV stations to do this, especially if the content shows the person concerned for education about this crime. In other words, never mind, if there are TV stations, radio stations, and other broadcast media who are determined to try to broadcast the broadcast, they will face the public directly,” Bobby told reporters, Saturday (11/9).
The Golkar Party legislator said that if the television station was still broadcasting Saipul Jamil, it would directly deal with the public. Of course, the risk that arises is to harm the image of the television station.
“Later it will harm the image of the broadcast media,” he said.
Bobby asked KPI to take firm action against Saipul Jamil. He suggested that KPI should not confuse the public regarding its attitude towards perpetrators of sexual crimes. Because the community has boycotted the husband of Dewi Persik.
“Don’t confuse the public with generalized arguments. The question related to the predicate of ex-convicts of law, in this context is different, referring to the response of the community or the public,” he said.
Previously, KPI chairman Agung Suprio explained whether Saipul Jamil was allowed to appear on television or other broadcast media. Agung emphasized that Saipul Jamil could appear on television only for educational contexts.
According to Agung, this is in accordance with the circulars that have been sent by KPI to broadcasting institutions, such as television stations. “He (Saipul Jamil, ed) can appear for educational purposes. So for example, if he is present about the dangers of predators, it can also be displayed like that,” said Agung.
According to Agung, according to the circular, Saipul Jamil can appear on television, for example in the context of interviews or education about sexual harassment. He also emphasized that for the time being Saipul Jamil could not appear on television if the purpose was for entertainment. KPI has also asked all broadcasters to stop glorifying Saipul Jamil’s freedom.
