Anticipating Emergency Conditions, Prison Automation Needs

The Tangerang Class I prison fire case which resulted in the deaths of 44 inmates needs to be an evaluation for the government. Prison conditions in the country are currently overloaded. The number of prison officers is also not balanced with the number of inmates. There needs to be a prison automation program in Indonesia so that emergency conditions do not recur.

The proposal was submitted by member of Commission III of the DPR Arsul Sani. Strictly speaking, he proposed the automation of prisons. This effort needs to be made because the number of officers is not balanced with the number of inmates in prison.

Supervision and security are also felt to be less than optimal.

Arsul said, the problem of this difference in numbers has become an acute problem and must be considered. With the number of wardens who are unequal to the occupants, he also sees the need for technological assistance. Some things can be done with automation. For example, to open and close prison doors.

“The example that can be given a touch of technology is the security and supervision side. Opening and closing cell doors and blocks should no longer be done manually by prison officers, but through automation controlled from the control room,” explained Arsul yesterday (11/9).

The use of technology, continued Arsul, currently does not exist in Indonesia. As a result, the need for wardens or guards is quite high. However, the number of human resources in the field is not necessarily sufficient. If the latest technology such as automation is not yet possible, the PPP politician suggested that there be assistance to fulfill the need for manual guarding.
